Get the Kids Cookin'!

Our kids can do more then just the eating in the kitchen; they can do some of the work for us too! In a world filled with convenience and packaged meals it may be hard to find the time to sit down and prepare a hearty meal for the family. Having your children help can be one of the best ways to get them excited about eating healthy meals from home, while saving you some of the work. Try some of these simple ways to those tiny hands helping out:

  1. Let them plan it    How often do we hear the complaint, “Are we having this again?” Get their ideas or try a rotating schedule so that they can be involved in some of the planning. Remember to use the food pyramid as a guide to make sure they include all the food groups. Encourage a variety of different foods within each food group on various days of the week.
  2. Shop till you drop   Let your children pick out some of their favorite fruits and vegetables themselves, so you know they’re likely to enjoy them. Teach them try different colors often and to use their senses of smell and taste to get them excited.
  3. Every little bit helps   Even simple tasks like mixing some fruit together, tossing a salad, or rinsing produce can make the younger ones feel involved. With supervision, some of the older children can help chop, blend, stir, or use the stove.
  4. Get a children’s cookbook   Kid-friendly recipes can be a perfect place to get ideas and teach children how to follow recipes and make things they enjoy. There are several options out there, just contact your local bookstore.

Remember eating at home can benefit the entire family. You’ll save money and improve your health all in one. Teaching kids early on the importance of cooking healthy meals at home can provide lifelong benefits in the end. Even the most simple of tasks can get children involved and encourage good nutrition. It’s never too early to start!
