Hewlett-Packard Technology Grant—West Jordan Middle School

West Jordan Middle School has been awarded a grant of cash and equipment from the HP Technology for Teaching Grant Initiative to support an innovative math and science program in which students design and build hot air balloons. Students will perform as if they were in a business environment as they develop blueprints, assembly charts, cost analysis spreadsheets, and reports. This Standards-based curriculum integrates elements of science, math, English, and technology as students move through design and production to their final presentations. This project will help students understand how academic learning is connected to their future professional lives.

Intel FoundationJordan School District

The Intel Foundation has renewed its commitment to excellence in JSD education with a $50,000 award to support the math and science curriculum development and teacher training program started two years ago. During the 2004-2005 year, this program will continue to expand the number of teachers and schools that are served. Teacher specialists will provide professional development on classroom strategies to support the new online, standards-based curriculums that have been developed for Algebra, Geometry, middle school science, and Biology. During 2003-2004, curriculum development will include ongoing revision of existing courses and the additional of math courses and science lessons.

First Amendment Schools—Bultler Middle School
Butler Middle School was awarded a First Amendment Schools grant of $12,000 for each of three years (2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06). The First Amendment Schools Educating for Freedom and Responsibility program is a national initiative "designed to transform how schools model and teach the rights and responsibilities of citizenship that frame civic life in our democracy."

Washington Mutual FoundationJordan School District
Washington Mutual Foundation grant award of $15,000 to provide Next Steps Early Reading Intervention training for selected staff at Sandy Elementary School.

Tech-Prep DemonstrationJordan School District

Federal 5-year grant award of $645,426 to support community partners' collaborative efforts to increase both the number and percentage of students transitioning to post-secondary education, and ultimately, to high-skill, high-wage employment through the Jordan Applied Technology Center/Salt Lake Community College Health Occupations Tech-Prep Program.

Teaching American HistoryJordan School District

Federal 3-year grant award of $913,198 to support multi-district, higher education and community collaborative efforts to improve the teaching of American history and student achievement through the establishment of the Jordan History Academy of Teachers. The summer academy will provide six weeks of intensive professional development training in best instructional practices for history. Additional professional development opportunities will be provided through semi-annual Saturday American history seminars and follow-up professional development. Ninety 4th-12th grade teachers from Jordan, Provo, and Wasatch School Districts who teach American history will particpate in the project. Higher education and community partners include Brigham Young University History Department, BYU David O. McKay School of Education, Utah Humanities Council, Utah Law-Related Education Project, and Utah Council for the Social Studies. In collaboration with the Utah Education Network, an online database of American History instructional materials will be available to teachers statewide. Valid and reliable grade level American history criterion-referenced tests will also be developed for teacher use statewide for the purpose of improving instruction.
