Pre 7.0 Measurement Estimation

PDF

Students research measurement. They estimate and measure a variety of objects and figure their margins of error between the estimates and the actual measurement. They graph their estimates vs. the actual measurements and compare the margin-of-error numbers to the graph.
Pre 7.1 Measurement Short Lessons These short measurement lessons include: a measurement fair, an estimate and measure game, metric matching, metric project, challenge problems, interpreting and creating scale drawings, and measurement challenges.
Pre 7.2 Galactic Measurement Using different rates of speed and times, students explore the distance from earth to planets in our solar system, They figure out how long it would take to travel to the various planets at the speed of light. They select their planet and rate of speed and determine appropriate speeds in order to visit the planet, have some time there, and return within the year. Finally, they examine their weight and jumping abilities on their chosen planet.

Pre 7.3a,b Measuring Angles
PDF
Protractors

Students explore the basic concept of an angle using a hinged mirror and pattern blocks. Then they classify and measure angles. They build different triangles with specified kinds of angles.

Pre 7.3c,d What's the Angle, Polygon Angles
PDF

Students classify and measure angles, build different triangles with specified kinds of angles, and examine the angles of regular polygons.

Pre 7.4 Puzzle Intro to Geometry
PDF

Students silently solve four rectangle puzzles, build geometric shapes from toothpicks, try to create squares by cutting irregular shapes once only, and find geometric shapes and symmetry in the world around them.

Pre 7.5a Geoboards and Pick's Formula
PDF
In these activities, students explore the geo-board by creating shapes with specified characteristics, sort shapes, discover Pick’s Theorem, and explore area using Pick’s Theorem.
Pre 7.6 Creating Polygons and Classifying Shapes  PDF
*graphic organizer
PDF
Students continue to investigate the characteristics of polygons. *Access graphic organizer at left.
Pre 7.7 Polygons and Art
PDF
Students create geometric art and identify geometric shapes within that art. They learn to inscribe regular polygons inside circles and use these shapes as the basis of the art. This activity is well worth the time it takes!
Pre 7.8 Problem Solving with Perimeter and Area      PDF There are two problem solving activities included below. In the first, students manipulate tiles to create a shape with perimeter of 16 units. In the second, students order shapes from least to greatest for area, compare the perimeters, and show the relationships between the areas and perimeters.
Pre 7.8b Rectangle Problem and Dilemma
PDF
Students solve problems in which they must differentiate between rectangle areas and perimeters. These problems are engaging and worthwhile learning experiences.
Pre 7.9 Spaghetti and Meatballs for All Students read the book Spaghetti and Meatballs for All by Marilyn Burns. They explore the questions posed in the book which involve perimeter and area and seating people at tables.
