Guess My Rule Starters

Pre 6.0 Figurate Number Patterns         PDF

Students explore and describe the patterns found in figurate numbers. They use the patterns to make predictions
Pre 6.1 Trains and Staircases
PDF
Students build and analyze patterns with blocks. They build polygon trains with pattern blocks and staircases with linking cubes. They develop the rules for the growth of the patterns and make predictions using the rules.
Pre 6.2 Patterns and Rules
PDF
Students analyze number patterns found in sequences of coordinate pairs. They describe the pattern, create a rule, differentiate between a constant pattern of growth and increasing pattern.
Pre 6.3 Predictions from Data Patterns         PDF Students graph data about pinto bean plant growth and shoe sizes. They analyze the graphs and make predictions.
Pre 6.4 Beginning Rates of Change
PDF
Students examine rates of change using graphs, numeric tables, written stories, and equations all relating distance and time. They use these tools interchangeably to find the change rates.
Pre 6.5 Racing Toys and Rates of Change
PDF

Students develop rates of speed for animated toys. Then they use the CBR to try to create graphs with specified rates, times and distances.

Pre 6.6a Bouncing Balls and Walking Strides
PDF

Students collect, organize and analyze data using tables and graphs. They bounce tennis balls and measure walking strides and times. Then they find missing pieces of data by using patterns and rules.
Pre 6.6b Data Collection and Graphs
PDF
Students design their own experiment for data collection, collect and organize the data into graphs and tables, and analyze the data and the graphs.
Pre 6.7a Stairs and Slope
PDF
Students build stairs from poster board, record their stairs on a coordinate grid, analyze the data about rise and run measurements, predict slope steepness using ratios, and graph and compare the slopes of the different stairs. If desired, they move on to examining the slope intercept form of line.
Pre 6.7b How Big Are Size 20's
PDF
Using a graph relating foot length and shoe size, students predict the foot length for size 20.
Pre 6.8a Zooming in on a Linear Equation
PDF
Students program different equations into calculators and/or computers, analyze the patterns, develop the slope intercept form of a linear equation, and write equations to match lines.
Pre 6.8b Walk Algebra Lines
PDF
Students move to create lines on a human size graph, record the coordinates and lines and write the equations for the lines. They move to create different lines and adjust the equations accordingly.
Pre 6.9 How Long Does it Take
PDF
Students collect data which relates the change in measurement of hard candy over time as they suck the candy. The lesson introduces students to a line of best fit and using the graphing calculator. Slope and y-intercept are also included.
Pre 6.91 Linear Constructed Response Assessments
PDF
Several linear growth problems are provided in which students must analyze data, create graphs, use equations, all related to linear growth.
Pre 6.92 More Tracking Change
PDF
More examples of linear growth problems.
