Pre 1.0 Riddles and Logic

Students are given a series of clues to determine the number and color of tiles in a bag. They work in pairs to write riddles of their and create sequences of clues that lead to a particular collection of tiles. They solve other students’ riddles.

Pre 1.1 Make a Million Using Mayan Numbers (Number Systems PartI)

Students are challenged to write a million using Mayan, base 20. By comparing our number system to others, students take a close look at the patterns in place value and the decimal system, and how positive and negative exponents are a way to record place value growth and decay.

Pre 1.2 Number Systems Part II PDF

Students access a website and pretend to visit another planet where dogs are intelligent and use base 4. They play a game in which they think like a computer using base 2. They problem solve to figure out different number system challenges.

Pre 1.3 Powers and Place Value PDF

Students use calculators to observe patterns. They relate powers of 10 to scientific notation and standard notation. They play a game which requires use of place value and scientific notation.
Pre 1.4 A Million and More Students explore concepts of large numbers, calculate the size of a million related to every day measurements, calculate the time needed to count to a googol, use scientific notation to calculate how long it would take to fly to distant stars.

Students are challenged to think about factors and products in games and receive some applied practice of multiplication facts. They analyze the games, evaluate prime and composite numbers, and create product game boards of their own.
Pre 1.6  Common Factors and Multiples                             PDF Students examine factor pairs and symmetry, find multiplication factor paths, create factor trees, use prime factors to find GCF and LCD, use Venn diagrams to differentiate between GCF and LCD.
Pre 1.7a-c  Integer Inquiry, Add and Subtract                              PDF Students use the calculator and/or a Geometer’s Sketchpad sketch to derive the rules for adding and subtracting with integers, then practice the rules.
