Geom 8.0 Discover and Write an Ancient Theorem       PDF

Students build puzzles involving the Pythagorean Theorem, write their version of the theorem, compare their version to textbook versions, and use the theorem to solve problems.

Geom 8.0b Pythagorean Theorem and Equations of Lines

PDF
Students find the length of the hypotenuse of right triangles by drawing squares off the sides of the triangles (drawn on grids). They review the Pythagorean Theorem and write the equations of lines for the sides of the right triangles.

Geom 8.0c Solving for the Midpoint
PDF

Students fold paper, draw and measure line segments to understand what a midpoint is and to derive the formula for finding the midpoint of a line segment.

Geom 8.1 Squares and Square Roots

PDF

Students draw squares on dot paper—some are square with the paper and some are on a diagonal. They find the radical numbers to describe the length of the sides of squares whose areas are known. They can use the Pythagorean theorem to check their answers. There are three versions of this activity.

Geom 8.2 Special Right Triangles

Students use Geometer’s Sketchpad for valuable experience with the properties of special right triangles. They use the
ratio answers derived in this activity to solve problems on worksheets or from their textbooks.
Geom 8.3 Right Triangle Ratios

PDF
Students use Geometer’s Sketchpad to explore the patterns in trigonometric ratios and examine the ratios in similar triangles. A surveying lab is also included. In this lab, students create a hypsometer and use it to measure heights of buildings which would be difficult to measure otherwise.
Geom 8.3b String Heights with Trig Ratios       Students use trig ratios to find the measurement of different strings (longer than the ceiling height) hung from the ceiling of the classroom. Students are given the height of the ceiling but are not allowed to measure the string using an instrument. They are given a protractor and a scientific calculator.
Geom 8.4 Law of Sines and Cosines Students work through the concepts involved in the development of the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines. They use these laws to solve problems.
Geom 8.5 Transit Lab Activities
PDF
*Transit PowerPoint
Students build a transit and use it to solve problems which also involve trig ratios
Geom Module 8 Unit Circle Worksheet      PDF
