Alg 7.0 Comparing Linear and Nonlinear
PDF

Students compare graphs of several standard nonlinear functions to a linear function graph. They explain why equations creates specific graphs.

Alg 7.1 Discovering Function Rules
PDF

Students examine the patterns in nonlinear data. They relate these patterns to the standard exponential and quadratic functions.
Alg 7.2 Critters, Exponential
PDF
Students collect data which models an exponential growth function.
Alg 7.3 Bouncing Ball, Quadratic
PDF
Students collect data which models a quadratic growth function.
Alg 7.4 Exponent Rules
PDF
Students derive the rules of exponents, compare their rules with the textbook, and come up with ways to differentiate the rules.
Alg 7.5 A Million, A Millionth
PDF
Studenst explore concepts of large numbers, calculate the size of a million related to every day measurements, calculate the time needed to count to a googol, use scientific notation to calculate how long it would take to fly to distant stars. Practice on operations using scientific notation is also included.

Alg 7.6a-b Area Models, Intro and Distribute
ALGEBLOCK NOTES

Alg 7.6c Perimeter, Area, Volume Using Algeblocks

In this lesson, students are introduced to area models and develop an understanding of the distributive property . (algeblocks and/or Geometer's Sketchpad)

Students use algeblocks to create shapes with specified perimeter and area dimensions—these dimensions involve variables.

Alg 7.7a-d Using Area Models
Alg 7.7a Multiply binomials I

Alg 7.7b Factor Trinomials I

Area Model Concentration

Alg 7.7c Multiply Binomials II

Alg 7.7d Factor Trinomials II

Secret to Factoring Trinomials

Students use area models to learn about multiplication of monomial and binomials. They observe patterns and develop strategies for factoring polynomials. In 7.7a they multiply binomials (positive values).
In 7.7b students factor trinomials (positive values). Use Area Model Concentration game to reinforce learning from 7.7b.

In 7.7c, students multiply binomials, including negative values.

In 7.7d, students factor trinomials, including negative values. Incorporate The Secret to Factoring Trinomials with 7.7d..
Alg 7.8 Factoring Practice
PDF

Mystery Lots Assessment

Students use area models to build and factor trinomials. They observe patterns and develop strategies for specifc types of trinomials.

Students use their knowledge of area models to solve problems centered on city planning and building lot sizes

Alg 7.9 Exponential Function Labs            PDF Student engage in the following labs: 1) One Grain of Rice, 2) How Long is this Fractal?, 3) Credit Card Investigation:
Alg 7.9b Quadratic Function Labs
PDF
In the first lab, students use CBRs to examine the patterns in ball bounces. In “The Arrow, The Ball and the Rock,” students solve problems using the standard quadratic equation relating height and time.
Algebra Function Projects
PDF
These projects are an opportunity to investigate and present group projects. Students will select an experiment, collect and analyze data, and make presentations about their findings.
